  • Choice Reviews : Choice Reviews 2006 December
This is a timely update of previous editions of this fine reference work. Since publication of the 2nd edition in 1997, the entire scientific publication process has become extensively electronic. However, the need for accurate, clear information is still paramount. New subjects covered in this edition include scientific communication ethics (very apropos), electronic manuscript submission and processing, author preparation of illustrative and graphical material, citation of electronic sources, and markup languages. Rewritten chapters include those on peer review, copyright, editorial processes, and writing style. The chapter on chemical nomenclature has been updated to include chemical "identifiers" including "InChI." Concise inclusion of supporting material is evident in the appendixes, which are strategically located within relevant chapters. Most of the nuts-and-bolts material from the 2nd edition has been retained, but the deletion of the chapter titled "Making Effective Oral Presentations" is regrettable. Since chemistry can be considered the "central science," this reference is intended for use in all scientific publishing. When this review was written, a Web-based version of the guide was planned. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners in all of the sciences. Copyright 2006 American Library Association.
