Ontario breast screening program, 20th anniversary report, 1990-2010

Chiarelli, Anna M. (Author). Canadian Electronic Library (Firm) (Added Author). Cancer Care Ontario (Added Author). Coherent Digital (Firm) (Added Author).

Summary: Breast cancer was by far the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Ontario women in 2009, with an estimated 8,581 cases. Breast cancer ranked second only to lung cancer among causes of cancer deaths, with an estimated 1,963 deaths. The prevalence of breast cancer is approximately 0.9%; by the beginning of 2007, approximately 59,100 Ontario women had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the preceding 10 years. (These figures represent provincial totals, including both individuals diagnosed within the OBSP and those diagnosed outside the screening program.) From 1990-2007, mortality declined by 35% for women aged 50-69. The decline in mortality rates is likely due both to improved breast cancer treatment and to increased participation in breast cancer screening. In Ontario, five-year relative survival for breast cancer increased from 80.8% during the 1992-1996 time period to 87.2% during the 2002-2006 time period.
