Early childhood development in Canadian communities findings from the Understanding the early years initiative

Summary: Increasing evidence supports the importance of investing in the early years of children's development. Recent research shows that the formative years are critical, and that the kind of nurturing and stimulation children receive in their early years can have a major impact on the rest of their lives. The research suggests that neighbourhoods and communities where children grow and learn influence their development; they affect parents ability to provide a positive family environment and the ability of others in the community to support the development of children as they grow up.
