Modern American culture is born as the radio becomes available, and jazz music is played in Harlem. Many are attracted to the glittery, fast-paced life in New York and others are appalled. Al Smith fights a losing battle in the 1928 presidential election. The decade ends with the massive Crash of '29. New York goes on a skyscraper building spree that ends with the dedication of the Empire State Building.
