Summary: This is a book about people - people who lived in Canada a hundred years or so ago - people who were Confederation Canadians. What was it like to be one of them? The following pages contain some clues - some glimpses into the events and issues that mattered to Canadians in the years just after 1867. Most of the illustrations are reprinted from the 'Canadian Illustrated News', a weekly journal published in Montreal fron 1869 to 1883. The text consists almost entirely of excerpts taken from newspapers, journals, weeklies, and private papers of the period. Together the words and pictures highlight some of the things Confederation Canadians said, did, and cared about. Not all Canadian voices are heard in these excerpts. The daily experiences of immigrants, urban labourers, and farmers, and to a large extent French Canadians are missing. - from the Foreword
